BEYOND BHS

Photo of students participating in the Beyond BHS future fairThanks to all who participated in Wednesday's Beyond BHS event.
The students' energy during the future fair was inspiring. The presentations were full of valuable information for students, parents and guardians alike.

Opportunities abound after high school for our BHS students!
STATE-REQUIRED TESTING ~ MAY 21-24

Image of SBA and WCAS logosState-required testing for 10th and 11th grade students will occur from Tuesday, May 21 - Friday, May 24 this year. BHS will be on a modified testing schedule, with all tests beginning at 8:45 each morning.

Please take note of grade-specific testing dates:

  • 10th grade Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in Math and English Language Arts: May 21-22 (English); May 23-24 (Math).  All 10th grade students will test on all four days.

  • 11th grade Washington State Assessment of Science (WCAS): May 22, 2024.

Students in 11th grade who need to retake SBA Math or ELA to meet the graduation pathway requirement will have the opportunity to do so at this time.  Counselors will reach out to 11th grade students who have not yet met this requirement to determine whether they will need to test in May.

FAFSA ~ ATTENTION SENIOR FAMILIES

Image of FAFSA logoAs of February 23, only 22% of high school seniors in Washington State had completed a 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

We highly recommend filling out the 2024-25 FAFSA form if your senior plans to attend a two or four year college next year..
  • The Washington College Grant (WA Grant) is guaranteed to eligible students, and about half of Washington families qualify.

  • More people are eligible for federal Pell Grants, and average Pell awards are expected to be higher.

  • In Washington, those who don’t qualify for federal financial aid can apply for state aid using the WASFA.

  • Many colleges are being flexible in response to the FAFSA delays, having pushed out priority deadlines for financial aid or enrollment decisions.

As you may have heard, there have been some challenges with this year’s FAFSA:

  • Colleges aren’t yet getting student data from the FAFSA. Once they do, they will have to process more applications in much less time. We recommend that students apply for aid as soon as possible and be patient in hearing back. Colleges will be in touch with applicants when they know more; families can also check college websites for updates.

ONLINE PAYMENT SITE

image of a $ signAP Exam Fees: Students taking AP classes are required to take the corresponding AP Exam.  Please refer to this information about College Board deadlines/fees, etc.

Miscellaneous Fees/Fines: Check to see if there are any outstanding fees or fines for your student. This can include parking tickets, missing sports fees, overdue books (these fines are removed from the system if books are returned in good condition) and other items. It is especially important for senior students to be thinking about now as fines must be cleared upon graduation.

CHILD SAFETY AND REUNIFICATION TOWN HALL ~ MARCH 24

Photo of Bainbridge Prepares volunteersImagine that an 8.0 earthquake hits the Seattle area on a Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Will you and your family be in one place? If you have kids, maybe they’ll be at school, you might be in Seattle at work, your elderly parent could be at a doctor’s appointment in Silverdale, and still another child could be on a field trip at Crescent Lake. Good for you if you have emergency supplies on hand at home and in your vehicle, but how will you all reunite so that you can get through the crisis together?

You’ll find some important answers and have the opportunity to ask your questions at the Bainbridge Prepares Child Safety and Reunification Town Hall scheduled for Sunday, March 24, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The town hall will kick off with an Introduction by Scott James, founder of Bainbridge Prepares. Anne LeSage, the City’s Emergency Management Coordinator, will then outline the role the City plays in child reunification. LeSage will be followed by a panel discussion with members of local child-centric organizations moderated by Kari Seybolt-Murphy, Bainbridge Prepares’ Child Safety & Reunification Team Lead. The evening will wrap up with a Q&A and a call to action.

Attend the town hall in person at the Bainbridge High School Theatre, 9330 High School Rd. The event is free but you can reserve a spot here. If you prefer, you can watch the event after the fact on video—the link will be posted here.

Need child care? A mock child reunification center will be set up for the event next door. You can leave your kids at the center with our team of volunteers (background checked and registered with the City) during the town hall and pick them up after. Space for child care is limited. Reserve your spot now here.
